Without Jesus, the light, we walk in darkness. Darkness is the shadow of death. “God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light day, and the darkness he called night.” - Genesis 1:4-5.

We read yesterday that he called the light “good”. What is the opposite of good? Bad. Darkness is bad for us. Darkness separates us from God. We were dead in our sin but we don’t have to stay there. He promises us in this passage of Luke to “guide or feet into the way of peace.” We could all use more peace in our life and in our world.

God is light and spoke light into existence. In Genesis after he created the heavens and the earth, his next act was to create light.

“The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light. and God saw that the light was good.” (Genesis 1:2-4)

God’s most exhaustive description of himself was simply “I AM.” He was and is and is to come. The angels in heaven repeat this reality without stopping. John’s gospel says that from the beginning Jesus was with God. He was and is present. He was in the heavens with his Father, he was with us on earth, and we anxiously await his return.
