Armed and Ready: Belt of Truth

“Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth…” (Ephesians 6: 14)

Now that we have a good idea of what we’re up against, we can now look to the different things we put on to stand firm with God’s strength in us. By the end of this passage, we’ll be protected from head to foot. We will not be defenseless against the present darkness we are facing. We will be armed and ready!

The first thing we put on is the belt of truth. For a Roman soldier, the belt of truth gets put on before any other piece. It is a piece that allows freedom of movement. Without it, their long robes would get in the way and cause them to stumble. The belt of truth is primary in battle. It prepares you to move forward in strength and freedom. Without it, you will stumble. If you stumble, you are likely to fall.

The belt was also used to hold weapons in place. Truth is an intersection of usefulness. With truth buckled beneath the armor, you are ready for action and have access to everything you need for the battle. Ephesians is telling us that truth is of the utmost importance. It is foundational and often behind the scenes, but it determines how the soldier goes forward.

We live in a time where truth seems to be subjective or offensive. The book of John tells us that Jesus is the way, the TRUTH and the life. The truth in this verse is referring to God’s truth. It means putting our trust in the things God says are true. It means that we acknowledge His truth in practical ways and base our actions on God’s revelation through His Word.

Questions for Reflection:

  1. Which of God’s truths are the first that come to mind?

  2. How do you grow in your awareness of God’s truth?

  3. What does it mean to acknowledge God’s truth practically?

  4. How does truth provide a foundation for life’s challenges?
